The Curriculum
Unit 1: Assessment, treatment planning and hot topics
- The biology – aetiology, macro and micro anatomy
- Assessment of the periodontium including BPE, 6PPC, gingival recession
- Discussing ways of making probing comfortable
- Key risk factors – importance, mechanisms, impact on treatment
- New classification
- New treatment guidelines
- Treatment planning and how to structure appointments
- Dealing with medically compromised patients including diabetics, bleeding disorders, cancer patients
- Dealing with periodontal emergencies
- Other conditions affecting the periodontium and surrounding tissues e.g. lichen planus, pemphigus, pemphigoid and oral cancer.
- Referring: when, how and what to say to patients. Types of treatment completed by a specialist including periodontal surgery
- Hot topics: Dentine hypersensitivity, halitosis, nutrition, occlusion and perio-systemic
- Case studies and discussions
- One-to-one hands-on: Probing
Unit 2: Core skills
- Oral hygiene – providing tailored advice, techniques, products
- Local anaesthesia – giving LA comfortably, step-by-step guidance on all techniques
- Non-surgical periodontal therapy – the science, technique, use of adjunctive agents, expected improvements
- Hand instrumentation (one-to-one hands-on)
- Ultrasonic instrumentation (one-to-one hands-on)
- Airflow & GBT (one-to-one hands-on)
- Dealing with backache and RSI
Unit 3: Advanced skills
- Implant assessment and maintenance
- Radiography – indications, selection of the most appropriate radiograph, taking, developing, interpreting, and reporting on radiographs (one-to-one hands-on). Conditions that may require referral.
- Photography (one-to-one hands-on)
- Whitening in relation to gum health including regulations
Unit 4: Practice skills
- Recall setting

Unit 5: Communication, career and business

- Problem solving e.g. discussing strategies when dentists/other hygienists’ BPEs are different to yours
